Magical Stones
The ancient Egyptians were highly superstitious and believed in the power of magic and the protective nature of the Magical Stones that they used as amulets or talismans in their jewelry. A magic stone could either be carried or worn. Pieces of jewelry containing magical stones were collected throughout the life of ancient Egyptians. Amulets and talismans containing magical stones were first used by the living. However, as the religious beliefs of the ancient Egyptians developed into one that focused on funerary and mortuary ceremonies and rituals they were worn by both the living and the dead. Items used in jewelry became 'magical stones' and had supernatural powers and religious significance ascribed to them. The precious and semi-precious magical stones used by the ancient Egyptians included emeralds, feldspar, peridot, gypsum crystals, carnelian, amethyst, chalcedony, malachite, jasper, lapis lazuli, tiger's eye and turquoise.
